This is one of the BEST pool inventions ever!  By sealing off the skimmer, you help prevent ice accumulation into the skimmer as the water level rises inside the pool from the cover pushing down.  After freezing, the ice WILL shift especially as it thaws in the spring.  That shifting grabs hold of the pool wall (thru the skimmer opening) and causes buckling & damage.  Damage that can be very expensive to repair.
